How to Get to Jaws Surf Break
Getting to the Jaws lookout can be a little tricky, but it’s worth the trip. Visitors typically use Hahana Road, then park near the end, by the cliffs. This is a dirt road, and parking is limited, so please use caution. A high‑clearance or 4WD vehicle is recommended.
Once parked, you can walk to the viewpoints. Here, you will find unbelievable views of the waves and surfers below. There is no official beach access to the surf break itself, and entering the water from shore is not advised.
Visitors, please respect private property and residents.
If you don’t want to drive yourself, consider a North Shore Tour by Maui Elite Adventures. They offer hotel pickup trips to Jaws, where you can watch the big waves safely from the cliffside.
Note: Jaws is about a 45 to 60-minute drive from Kamaole Sands, one of PMI Maui’s most popular resorts.
Why is Jaws So Popular?
With waves that can exceed 30 to 60 feet during the biggest winter swells, Jaws sees some of the largest rideable surf in the world. These conditions paved the way for tow‑in surfing, where surfers use jet skis to be pulled into waves that are too fast and powerful to paddle into.
Jaws regularly hosts the world’s best big‑wave surfers, photographers, and media crews. Even when the waves are smaller, the area draws visitors for its raw beauty, dramatic cliffs, and sense of untamed Hawaiʻi. It is most popular during the winter.
When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Jaws?
The best time to witness Jaws in action is during the winter months, typically November through March. This is the time of year when powerful North Pacific swells collide with Maui’s North Shore. The ocean may appear deceptively gentle on calm days, but big swells transform the area into one of the most intense surf spots on the planet.
Safety Tips for Visiting Jaws
- Observe only from the designated lookout areas.
- Do not attempt to swim, surf, or snorkel at Peʻahi unless you are a professional big‑wave surfer.
- Stay back from cliff edges, especially in wet or windy conditions.
- Follow posted signage, respect private land, and pack out all trash.
