Our Favorite Facts About the Haleakala Crater

It’s the Most Famous Spot on Maui

Maui is full of natural treasures, but Haleakala Crater is by far the most popular! “Haleakala” in Hawaiian means “House of the Sun”, and when you see the summit rising 10,023 feet above sea level, you’ll understand why. Haleakala National Park expands from the Hana side of the island all the way down to the ocean, so don’t forget to bring your camera! This spot is made for scenic pictures.

Fun Fact: Legend has it that the goddess Hina once complained to her son, Maui, that the sun moved across the sky too fast. In the morning, Maui climbed to the top of Haleakala, lassoed the sun, and made him agree to move slower in the sky. That’s why Maui has so many gorgeous, sunny days!

Haleakala Erupted Recently

This impressive volcano last erupted in 1790, which, in volcano years, is pretty recent! Haleakala is dormant, which means that it’s not done erupting yet. But, don’t worry! Geological time is measured in millions of years, so even though the volcano may erupt in the future, you likely won’t be around to see it!

You Can Hike the Volcano at Sunrise

Haleakala offers some of the most spectacular sunrise and sunset views on the planet. You can admire vibrant colors as they fade into jaw-dropping views of the island, with the endless ocean in the distance. To fully enjoy this experience, take a Maui Volcano Tour! You’ll have the opportunity to marvel at nature and hike one of the most beautiful trails on the island.

Tip: Make sure you pack a jacket and closed-toe shoes. Because the summit is high above sea level, it gets cold at the top!
