Top 3 Tips for Your Maui Snorkeling Adventure
1. Get Familiar With the Gear
Having the right gear is the most important thing when going on a Maui snorkeling adventure. Not all snorkel sets are identical, and if you are a beginner, there are a few things you need to know.
- First, put the mask on your face, starting with the strap on top of your head. Then slide it to the front. If it’s too hard to do, it probably means the mask is too tight for you.
- Sit down on the sand and put your fins on. Make sure you walk backward while entering the ocean and watch out for rocks!
- When you are in the water, relax and move slowly. You will see better this way.
Tip: Don’t smile! It may sound bizarre, but the smile lines on your face will break the seal of your mask and water will enter through it. If water gets in your mask, stick your head up and tilt the bottom so the water can leak out.
If you are not traveling with your own gear, we highly suggest you rent it on the island! Boss Frog’s is one of the best local companies. You can rent snorkel equipment for the day or the entire week, and their prices are affordable.
2. Practice
The best way to get ready to snorkel in Maui and enjoy the experience to the fullest is to practice! Choose a pool or a calm beach, like Kamaole Beach Park, to test your skills at this new activity. Not only will practicing help your body get used to it, but it will also give you the confidence boost you need!
If you are not used to being in the water, consider wearing water flotations and remember to always wear fins. It will feel unnatural at first, but that’s normal! Kick around a little and use your upper leg muscles to propel yourself.
