8 Of Our Favorite Things to Do on or Near Ohe’o Gulch

‘Ohe’o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) is one of Maui’s most famous attractions in Haleakala National Park. Despite the alternate name, the Gulch is home to more than seven natural pools and is home to some of the best hiking in the state. Due to the nature of the area, the pools are often closed for swimming due to rockslides and other potentially hazardous swimming conditions, so please check before you go if you plan on swimming.

Even if you don’t plan on getting in the water, ‘Ohe’o Gulch is still an incredible sight, and there are plenty of things to do in the area. Here are our top eight things to do near ‘Ohe’o Gulch.

Visit Waimoku Falls

Waimoku Falls is one of the most popular hikes in ‘Ohe’o Gulch. The four-mile round trip hike is considered moderate to strenuous, with some sections of the trail being steep and slippery. However, the reward at the end is worth it as you’ll be greeted by a 400-foot tall waterfall.

Hike to Makahiku Falls

If you’re looking for an easier hike, the two-mile round trip to Makahiku Falls is a great option. This shorter hike will take you through bamboo forests and past several cascading waterfalls before arriving at the 400-foot tall Makahiku Falls.

Explore Haleakala National Park

‘Ohe’o Gulch is located in Haleakala National Park, home to Haleakala, a massive dormant volcano. In addition to hiking, the park offers plenty of other activities, such as biking, horseback riding, and stargazing.

Visit the ‘Ohe’o Visitor Center

The ‘Ohe’o Visitor Center is a great place to learn more about the area and pick up any permits you may need for activities in the park.

Check out the Other Waterfalls in Haleakala National Park

In addition to Waimoku and Makahiku Falls, ‘Ohe’o Gulch is home to several other cascading waterfalls. Some of our favorites include Pipiwai Trail, Bamboo Forest Trail, and Ka’elepu Falls.

Swim in the Pools

If the conditions are right, swimming in natural pools is an incredible experience. Please check with the park ranger station before heading out as conditions can change quickly and swimming is not always allowed.

Stargaze at Haleakala

Haleakala is one of the best places on Maui for stargazing. The park is home to an astronomical observatory and offers several stargazing programs throughout the year.

Visit the Haleakala Crater

The Haleakala Crater is a must-see while in Maui. You can drive to the summit or take a guided tour from one of the many companies in the area. Once at the top, you’ll be treated to incredible views of the crater and surrounding area.
